5 lesser-known facts about the history of make-up

Make-up, or decorative cosmetics, is a term referring to a set of activities, techniques and arts related to what today we call "make-up".

A very common practice nowadays, almost essential for women, yet few know the origins of some of the most common products.

Here are 5 lesser-known facts about the world of decorative cosmetics, dating back millions of years.

1. Make-up has existed since prehistoric times

Today, make-up is mainly used to enhance a woman's facial features or to conceal minor imperfections.

Definitely useful for feeling beautiful, but not everyone knows that make-up dates back to prehistoric times. Decorating the body was, in fact, a practice used to identify a person's tribe of origin, as shown by numerous cave paintings found over the years.

It became a luxury element during the rococo period, when Queen Marie Antoinette lived, and developed further in the 1940s with the advent of colour cinema. Over time, make-up has evolved into what is now considered a true art form.

2. Kohl pencils: a thousand-year-old tradition

The use of colour in cosmetics dates back to the time of the Egyptians, thanks to Queen Cleopatra, the ultimate icon of feminine beauty, who darkened her eyes with Kohl, a mixture obtained from burnt resins.

Today, kohl pencils, also known as Kajal, thanks to their thousand-year-old tradition, are now made with a softer tip and give a super intense look, with results that outperform any other eye pencil.

3. Porcelain skin: the foundation of Elizabeth I of England

Queen Elizabeth I of England was the first to start the trend of a pale look, similar to porcelain skin.

Her foundation was made with white lead, a compound based on lead carbonate, a toxic and irritating substance.

4. Lipstick: Queen Marie Antoinette's favourite product

Queen Marie Antoinette, known for her love of excess and for her beauty rituals reserved only for her favoured attendants, was the pioneer of the white and red look.

Her favourite cosmetic was rouge, a blend of waxes and carmine, a natural dye obtained from the dried body of an insect called cochineal, which she applied to her lips and cheekbones; today it has evolved into lipstick.

5. Contouring: thanks to Marilyn Monroe

Whitey, the stage name of Marilyn Monroe's make-up artist, was the pioneer of contouring as we know it today.

His technique involved blending a darker foundation onto the star's skin, to make her face appear slimmer.

Today, paired with light foundations and highlighters, it's the most popular technique among influencers and beauty gurus online.

Decorative cosmetics: where make-up begins

Decorative cosmetics follow very precise rules to create spectacular, irresistible looks, always on-trend and in line with the latest fashions.

But what are these rules?

Here's a list of useful tips for creating the perfect make-up look for every occasion.

Skin preparation

Turning your face into a canvas to express your creativity is a wonderful thing, but first you need to prepare your skin.

Skincare is a habit often underestimated by many women, but it's actually essential, because direct contact between skin and cosmetics can, over time, cause irritation and lead to the appearance of blemishes on the face, resulting in dull, tired-looking skin.

To avoid these issues, it's good practice to cleanse daily and combine this with the use of primers.

Similar to moisturising creams, available for face, eyes, lips and lashes, primers are essential to protect, even out and brighten the skin.

This way, even expression lines or the first signs of ageing are softened, giving you a fresh, rested-looking face every day.

A sculpted face

Having a perfectly sculpted face is every woman's dream, but small imperfections are always lurking.

Well-executed contouring and well-groomed eyebrows can optically transform your facial features and expression.

First, apply concealer and foundation to correct minor skin imperfections.

For contouring, alternate light foundations on the areas of your face you want to enhance with darker foundations (or bronzers) on the areas you want to minimise, then set everything with a powder. Add a touch of colour to your cheeks with blush and you'll be perfect.

If you want to leave a trail of light, apply a highlighter on your cheekbones and you'll shine like a star.

Finally, your eyebrows. Well-groomed and defined with a suitable pencil, they'll make your face radiant and in harmony with the rest of your features.

Irresistible Eye Make-up

Eyes come in different shapes and colours that vary from person to person. To make them irresistible and magnetic, you just need to know how to enhance them with make-up.

The right palette, pencils, eyeliner or eyeshadow, plus a touch of mascara, can transform your gaze and any small imperfections related to it.

The choice of colours and their intensity depends on your eye shade, your complexion and your hair colour.

If you have light eyes and fair skin, then eyeshadows in pink, peach, caramel and gold tones are perfect for you, as they add a touch of radiance.

If, instead, you have darker features, eyeshadows in brown tones are ideal for enhancing your eyes.

A medium skin tone could be perfectly paired with eyeshadows and palettes in warm tones leaning towards bronze.

Kissable Lip Make-up

Lips, whether they're the star of the look or take a back seat, are very important to complete your make-up.

There are many colours of lipsticks available, from neutral tones to very dark ones, even black, but when choosing a colour, it's essential to also consider the finish: matte or glossy, you should always choose the lipstick shade based on the occasion and the colours used in your make-up look.

Today, alongside traditional lipsticks, there are also glosses, ideal for adding a touch of shine while keeping lips looking natural, and lip tints, which are much more long-lasting than a regular lipstick, especially appreciated by those who are out and about all day.
